KNIT THE SEASON: A Friday Night Knitting Club novel
by Kate Jacobs

The novel continues the saga of Georgia Walker's friends, family and yarn shop, Walker & Daughter, from the original FRIDAY NIGHT KNITTING CLUB novel.

It's the holiday season at the cozy, customer friendly Walker & Daughter knitting shop located on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Walker & Daughter is now managed by mostly by Georgia Walker's daughter , Dakota, with a little help from her friends in the Friday Night Knitting Club (Lucie, KC, Darwin, Anita and Peri). The women all lead lives of their own and use the knitting shop as a central spoke to keep connected to one another.

Life goes on and these women are no exception. All of them are being pulled in different directions, especially Dakota. She is faced with the choice of career or family this holiday season.

This heartwarming, poignant novel is all about human bonds, the importance of memories, the importance of knitting, and food to bring people together. It's a wonderful read for the holidays and would make a great gift for anyone whether they knit or not! What do you think?

A QUESTIONABLE LIFE
By Luke Lively

Jack Oliver is a hard-working, not-quite-ethical Philadelphia banker who has always made the tough choices and sacrifices to achieve success. Reality sets in for Jack, when the family owned bank he works for is sold to a mega-bank. Jack finds himself knocked from the top rung to the bottom in short order.

Stress and bad lifestyle choices catch up with him. He lands in the hospital. While there he has a rude awakening: his children hate him, his ex-wife hates him and his girlfriend is only interested in the numbers on his paycheck.

Jack meets Benjamin Franklin Price, better known as "Benny" and his life is forever changed. He quite literally becomes a "new man" just like Scrooge in the famous Dickens story "A Christmas Carol." There are quotes throughout the book from Benny's wisdom. Luke Lively has quite cleverly written a "book within a book."

The book is very well written and you may feel like you know the main character. I think I might have even worked for him! Great story for any time of the year, but particularly relevant now. What do you think?

BETWEEN ME AND THE RIVER: Living Beyond Cancer - A Memoir

The author of the book, Carrie Host, is a fascinating, involved, vibrant person:
>She holds a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Colorado and attended the University of Seville in Spain.
>She and her husband co-founded the colorado Youth Program, a nonprofit that connects underprivileged children with nature and their community.
>She is a mother, a professional writer, a cancer survivor and volunteer.
>She serves on the Board of Directors for the Carcinoid Foundation (www.caringforcarcinoid.org, a nonprofit foundation dedicated to discovering a cure for carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumors.
>She is also a member of Rock Mountain Team Survivor, an organization of 400 individuals who promote health, education and fitness programs for women affected by cancer.

The book is an eloquently and beautifully written journey of a young mother diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, cardinoid tumor. Carrie is an accomplished professional writer who crafts her story so that the reader feels the fear she feels, as well as the self-discovery she experiences.

There are funny stories in the book that will make you laugh, poignant moments with her children and husband and life-changing moments as well.

This is a lovely book of hope. It would make a great gift for an individual recently diagnosed with cancer, a person currently undergoing treatment, and/or a cancer survivor. The book is a look inside of cancer and treatment for those of us who have been lucky enough to not be touched by this terrible disease. What do you think?

NECESSARY AS BLOOD

Scotland Yard detectives Gemma James and Duncan Kincaid are led into London's legendary East End, once the haunt of Jack the Ripper where races and cultures still clash. Amidst the trendy galleries and glamorous nightlife of Whitechapel there is still a violent and seedy underside, where unspeakable, unthinkable crimes bring terror to the innocent.

James and Kincaid are led by a family friend to a disappearance, a bloody murder and a child in terrible danger. One beautiful Sunday afternoon in mid May, young mother and successful artist, Sandra Gilles, leaves her young daughter, Charolott, with a family friend to run a quick errand. She disappears without a trace and shortly thereafter, her husband, Naz Malik, a Pakistani lawyer, is found brutally murdered under particularly unusual circumstances, leaving their young daughterb alone.

As the case grows more intense and dangerous, a personal issue threatens to throw Gemma and Duncan off the trail. In the end, it is up to them to stop a vicious killer and to protect the child whose fate hangs in the balance.

The Gemma James/Duncan Kincaid mystery series is one of my favorites. The novel is very will written and takes on some complex social issues such as drug dealers, human trafficking and child protective services. There is also an undercurrent of the underworld throughout. A lovely thrill ride through Whitechapel and the East End. I do so love a good mystery! What do you think?

THE TEST

Paul Parnell is a billionaire about to die. In attempt to rule his family from the grave, he decides to make his last will and testament a test of the moral fiber of his children. The two-billion dollar estate will be divided among the heirs who pass "the test."

The six children, products of two marriages and one affair, have only one year to make a difference and pass the test stipulated by their father or find themselves left out of the inheritance. Lives begin to unravel as the Parnell siblings are tested in ways they could never have predicted. With this vast fortune at stake, evil takes hold in their midst with an agenda of its own. Murder becomes an unintended part of the legacy. What begins as a test of character and moral fiber, quite literally becomes a matter of life and death.

This is a complicated family novel with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. Be ready to think you have it figured out, only to find you don't! Excellent read. What do you think?
